UV vs LED: What is the Difference?

You will often see the terms UV lamp and LED lamp used interchangeably, but they refer to slightly different technologies. Both emit ultraviolet light to cure gel polish — traditional UV lamps use fluorescent bulbs that typically run at wavelengths of around 365 nm, whilst modern LED lamps emit a narrower UV range of around 385 to 405 nm.

In practice, an LED lamp cures most gel polishes faster (around 30 seconds per layer compared with 2 minutes for older UV lamps), lasts far longer without bulb replacement, and generally has a lower running cost. That's why every lamp in the Lavender Violets range is an LED model — we want your manicure to be quick, efficient and stress-free.

Our polishes are engineered to cure reliably under either style of lamp, so you can use an older UV model if that's what you already own. For best results, however, we recommend pairing our gels with one of our dedicated LED lamps.

Key Features of Our Lamps

Every Lavender Violets nail lamp is chosen for ease of use, consistent curing and thoughtful touches that make at-home gel manicures genuinely enjoyable.

Fast Curing

Base and colour layers set in just 30 seconds, top coats in 60 seconds — a full manicure in half an hour.

🧠

Smart Sensors

Automatic motion detection starts and stops curing, so you can focus on your technique rather than the timer.

🕊

Low-Heat Mode

A gentle curing mode gradually increases intensity to minimise the warm sensation on thinner or sensitive nails.

📏

Generous Chamber

Wide enough for all five fingers or a full toe set, with a removable magnetic base for pedicures.

🔋

USB-C Power

Modern USB-C input means you can use a UK mains plug, a power bank or your laptop on the go.

🌱

Long-Life LEDs

Rated for 50,000+ hours of use, the LEDs never need replacing in typical home use.

Choosing the Right Wattage

Wattage is a good shorthand for curing speed. Higher-wattage lamps cure thicker gel layers more evenly, though they're not strictly essential for a good manicure — what matters most is the combination of lamp and gel formula.

Wattage Best For Typical Cure Time
36W Light users, travel, quick touch-ups 45–60 seconds
48W Everyday home manicures (our bestseller) 30–45 seconds
72W Nail enthusiasts and pro-style finishes 20–30 seconds

All our lamps cure our HEMA-free gel polishes to a fully hardened, glossy finish.

Using Your Lamp Safely

  • Apply gel polish in thin, even coats. Thick layers can trap uncured product underneath and cause wrinkling.
  • Follow our published cure times: 30 seconds for base and colour, 60 seconds for top coat.
  • Keep the lamp's inner mirror clean. Wipe gently with a soft cloth to maintain even light distribution.
  • If you are concerned about UV exposure, wear UV-protective fingerless gloves or apply a broad-spectrum SPF to your hands.
  • Do not look directly into the lamp while it is running.

Complete Starter Kits

If you are starting your gel-polish journey, a Lavender Violets starter kit gives you everything you need in one beautifully presented box. Each kit includes an LED lamp, a base coat, a top coat, a selection of signature shades, a cleanser wipe and a nail file — ready to use straight out of the packaging.

Our starter kits are a genuine time-saver: you avoid the guesswork of buying individual products, you save money compared to purchasing pieces separately, and you know every item has been matched for curing compatibility. They also make a thoughtful gift for birthdays, hen parties or anyone who appreciates a long-lasting home manicure.

For a full step-by-step overview of how to use your kit, visit our gel polish instructions page, where we walk through every stage from nail prep to removal.

Caring For Your Lamp

A Lavender Violets LED lamp is built to last, but a few small habits extend its life considerably. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight and away from sinks, because accidental splashes can disturb the electronics. Wipe the interior mirror with a dry, lint-free cloth every few weeks to keep curing even — a dusty mirror is the single most common reason manicures turn out slightly tacky after a perfect-seeming cure.

Our LED bulbs are rated for approximately 50,000 hours of use, which for most people is a lifetime of home manicures. If a bulb ever does dim or fail, contact us at hello@lavendervioletsgelpolish.co.uk. Most issues are quickly solved by a replacement bulb cartridge rather than a whole new lamp — kinder to both your budget and the planet.

Light-Free Option? Try Dip Powder

If you prefer a system that doesn't need a lamp, our dip powder range offers similar long-wearing results with no UV or LED curing required.
