HEMA Free Gel Polish

Beautiful nails shouldn't come at the cost of irritated skin. Our HEMA-free gel polish collection delivers the same stunning colour, glossy finish and 21-day wear as our signature range — without the methacrylate most commonly linked to nail allergies. Perfect for sensitive skin, mums-to-be wanting a gentler manicure, and anyone whose skin has reacted to gel in the past.

What Is HEMA?

HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and its close relative Di-HEMA TMHDC are small, highly reactive monomers used across the nail industry for many years. They help gel polish bond tightly to the nail plate and cure into a tough, flexible finish under a UV or LED lamp. On paper, HEMA is a brilliant ingredient — it gives gel its grip, its shine and its wear.

The issue is its size. HEMA is small enough to penetrate skin if uncured polish comes into contact with the surrounding cuticle during application. Repeated exposure can sensitise the skin, and once sensitivity develops it is lifelong. The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety issued guidance recommending HEMA and Di-HEMA TMHDC be used only by trained professionals, and many UK nail technicians have actively moved to HEMA-free chemistry as a precaution.

For home use, a HEMA-free formula removes one of the most common sources of allergic reaction, making at-home gel noticeably safer for those with sensitive skin, eczema-prone fingers or a history of contact dermatitis.

What Our HEMA-Free Range Excludes

Our 10-Free formulation removes the ingredients most often flagged by dermatologists and conscious beauty shoppers. Every bottle is free from:

  • HEMA
  • Di-HEMA TMHDC
  • Formaldehyde
  • Formaldehyde resin
  • Toluene
  • Camphor
  • DBP phthalate
  • Xylene
  • Parabens
  • Animal-derived ingredients

Who Benefits From HEMA-Free Polish?

Sensitive-Skin Clients

If your fingers have ever felt itchy, tight or inflamed around the cuticle after a gel manicure, HEMA is a likely culprit. Swapping to a HEMA-free base coat and colour is a straightforward, evidence-led way to avoid that reaction.

Allergy-Aware Nail Fans

Once a methacrylate allergy develops it extends to many medical products, including some dental resins. Avoiding unnecessary exposure through nail polish is a sensible precaution for long-term skin health.

Expectant & New Mums

Many pregnant clients prefer a pared-back ingredient list. Our HEMA-free, 10-Free formulas are a popular choice for gentle at-home manicures during pregnancy and beyond.

Does HEMA-Free Mean Shorter Wear?

In short: no. Modern HEMA-free resin technology has come a long way. Our formula uses a blend of aliphatic urethane acrylates, carefully selected photo-initiators and pigments milled to fine consistency, so the finished manicure wears 21 to 28 days — matching our signature range.

Application is identical. Follow the exact steps on our gel polish instructions page: shape, buff, cleanse, then two thin colour coats with base and top coats either side. The only technical difference is that HEMA-free gels prefer slightly thinner coats and a complete cure — always use an LED lamp with at least 36W output.

If you are curious about the lamp side of the process, our UV nail lamp guide explains exactly what to look for in a compatible lamp.

Good Habits That Further Protect Your Skin

Even with a HEMA-free formula, mindful application makes a real difference. Here are the habits we recommend to everyone who paints their own nails at home.

  • Avoid skin contact. Keep every coat at least 1 mm away from cuticles and side walls. A well-formed bead on your brush will make this easier.
  • Cure fully. Any uncured polish on skin is where sensitivity begins. Do not cut cure times short.
  • Clean up before curing. If you touch the skin, gently lift the polish away with a liner brush or wooden stick before placing your hand under the lamp.
  • Check your lamp's output. An underpowered lamp will leave polish partially cured and more likely to irritate. If you are unsure, pair your polish with one of our matched LED lamps for guaranteed compatibility.
  • Hydrate daily. Cuticle oil reinforces the skin barrier around the nail, making it a little more resilient to any residues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HEMA-free polish vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. Our HEMA-free line is certified vegan and cruelty-free. We do not use animal-derived ingredients and we do not test on animals at any point in formulation, production or distribution.

Can I use HEMA-free polish with my existing lamp?

Usually yes, provided the lamp is LED (or UV/LED hybrid) with at least 36W. See our UV nail lamp page for a full compatibility guide.

Will HEMA-free polish look different from regular gel?

No. The finished manicure looks identical — the same high pigment load, the same mirror-glass shine, the same smooth surface. All the difference is in what is not in the bottle.

Is HEMA banned in the UK?

No, HEMA is not banned. Under UK and EU rules it is restricted: it may only be used in nail products intended for professional application. Home-use gels sold in Britain must meet specific labelling and concentration requirements. Our HEMA-free choice goes a step further by removing it entirely.

Is the dip powder range also HEMA-free?

Our dip powder system uses a completely different chemistry that does not contain HEMA, making it another gentle option for sensitive skin.
